May 8th - Confluence, PA
Sunny and 70 to start the day. Upgraded breakfast then back on the trail. Just us and the birds, almost as sparsely populated as newfoundland. Remind me why we cant take more immigrants? And yet, 100 years ago there were railroads running on both sides of the river. Brunchy stop at connolsville canteen with WW2 and train exhibit. This place was key stop for 600k troops, fed by 800 women, on their way to fight the war. Onwards upstream, river getting faster with rapids, so 33% of us could swim at ohiopyle. Last 10 miles to Confluence and our deluxe riverhouse, some in town at smith house. Cooking in, ice cream at the outflow (3 ice cream sandwiches for $5) and jacuzzi au natiral. Then waiting for the rain. 52 miles, first flat (not counting tubeless tire packing problem).
